THE GENTI D’ABRUZZO MUSEUM - PESCARA

The Museum traces the history of man in Abruzzo from his first appearance as a Palaeolithic hunter emphasizing the contribution offered by the Italic tribes to the affirmation of Rome, and a quick summary highlights how much of this past has been handed down to us in terms of customs, beliefs, places of worship, productions, objects, forms. The Genti d’Abruzzo museum is located inside the building of the Bourbon barracks along the Pescara river.

The upper floor, eighteenth century, was built on the basement which belonged to the sixteenth century fortress of Pescara. These premises in the nineteenth century were used as a penal colony by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, for political prisoners. In fact, from 1850 to 1860 many exponents of the Abruzzo Risorgimento were imprisoned there.

In this prison, young revolutionaries were chained as a couple to prisoners for common crime to increase their punishment.

Il Museo traccia la storia dell’uomo in Abruzzo dal suo primo apparire come cacciatore paleolitico sottolineando il contributo offerto dalle tribù Italiche all’affermazione di Roma, e una rapida sintesi evidenzia quanto di questo passato si sia tramandato fino a noi in termini di costumi, credenze, luoghi di culto, produzioni, oggetti, forme.Il Museo delle Genti d’Abruzzo si trova all’interno dell’edificio delle caserme borboniche lungo il fiume Pescara.

Il piano superiore, settecentesco, fu costruito sul seminterrato che apparteneva alla cinquecentesca fortezza di Pescara. Questi locali nell’Ottocento furono adibiti a bagno penale del Regno delle Due Sicilie, per i detenuti politici. Infatti, dal 1850 al 1860 vi furono imprigionati molti esponenti del Risorgimento abruzzese.

In questo carcere, i giovani rivoluzionari venivano incatenati in coppia con i detenuti per reati comuni, per aumentare la loro pena.
